Rutland's Early Clockmakers: Lord and Goddard
The history of Rutland’s Early Clockmakers, Lord and
Goddard, is the topic of this quarterly issue.
In the summer of 1996 Mrs. George Harer of Long Island, N.Y. presented an authentic Nichols Goddard tall clock (illustrated on the cover) made in Rutland in the early
nineteenth century.
As a result of this gift Dawn D. Hance gathered together research material on Goddard and his partner Benjamin Lord, detailing their lives and work in Rutland.
Contributions to this article came from the Bennington Museum; the Sheldon Museum; the Vermont Historical Society; and Lilian Baker Carlisle, author of Vermont Clock and Watchmakers, Silversmith and Jewelers.
Accompanying this extensive text are numerous photographs of Goddard Homes, furniture, clocks and clock works. Contents of Nicholas Goddard’s extensive inventory of his estate, is also included.
